A Clarion County native, News Reporter Nathan Crooks, lives and works in the South American nation of Chile, which was struck by that record setting earthquake, early Saturday.     In spite of the initial tremor and continuing aftershocks, we were able to make telephone contact with Nathan Crooks that day.     Crooks told us he escaped any injury when he was awoken by the quake at his Santiago home.     The local man told us this quake was obviously stronger than others he had earlier experienced.     Crooks braced himself in a door frame for protection.     He reported the only interior problem was books flying off of shelves.      Crooks also noted the loss of utility services in his area.     At his first opportunity, Nathan Crooks contacted his parents, back in Clarion, to alert then to the earthquake and the fact he was safe.     Nathan Crooks then went to work, filing news reports on the quake for worldwide media outlets.
