Over the weekend: The site of Clarion's former Bi Lo supermarket was still open to the public. But, the place was only offering for sale what had been all of the store's fixtures and furnishings. It was, in fact, on Friday evening when the Clarion Bi Lo supemarket quit operation as a supermarket. The Clarion Bi Lo market was, of course, one of the stores which the Tops markets chain recently purchased from the bankrupt Penn Traffic Company. Most, of all the stores which Tops bought from Penn Traffic, such as the former Bi Lo sites in Brookville and Dubois, have already been converted into Tops markets locations. However, Clarion's Bi Lo location failed to pass a review by Tops officals.

Power Companies Merger Challenge

There's been a strange turn of developments in that poposal for First Energy Corporation to acquire Allegheny Energy Corporation. The federal court, in Pittsburgh, is being asked, by the Louisiana Municipal Police Employees Retirement System, to stop the plan for one Western Pennsylvania local area electric utility to puchase the other. The Louisiana retirement system owns an unspecified amount of Allegheny Energy stock which it asserts would be undervalued in the proposed sale. The legal action seeks to stop the deal until Allegheny Energy gets more value for its shareholders, possibly by selling Allegheny Energy through a competitive bidding process. First Energy operates the Pennelec power system locally.
